Researchers, doctors, nurses and students at the University of Miami engage with counterparts throughout the islands on training, teaching and sharing knowledge.

From Puerto Rico to Jamaica to Haiti to Cuba, UM’s medical and public health professionals are engaging in rich partnerships on trauma care, vector borne disease, pediatrics, vision care and more.

The goal, as always, is to focus on training and the sharing of knowledge, which provides benefits to all involved. Some of the work being done in the Caribbean, especially in Haiti, dates back decades.

Some work is relatively new, and gathering steam. The University of Miami is exploring collaborations with peer institutions. Doctors and faculty are developing rich relationships with colleagues in Cuba, Dominican Republic and Jamaica. Discovery and invention follow. Learning, many of the faculty say, is a two-way street.

University of Miami doctors, nurses and health care providers have been involved in providing health care training and expertise in Haiti for more than 20 years. UM doctors were the first responders to Haiti following the 2010 earthquake that hit Port-au-Prince.
